Costa Rica vacation tours for birdwatchers

With over 850 different species of birds and more than 100 migrant birds from the north temperate zone, Costa Rica is a bird watcher’s paradise. Our guides are experienced ornithologists, equally at home with the most experienced birders and eager to assist the beginning birdwatcher learn how to use their binoculars, listen for the songs and make identification.

We visit a variety of different environments: Cloud forest, lowlands, rainforests, mountainous regions, central valley, and rivers, so one can see as many different birds as possible on one trip. There are over 400 different species recorded in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve! Some of our guests favorites: scarlet macaw, trogon (40 species), blue crowned motmot, toucans, jacamar, three-wattled bellbird, and of course the many shore birds---herons and their relatives. Over 50 species of hummingbirds have been recorded in Costa Rica. For many visitors they are the most beautiful and fun to watch. Because we go to their habitats with experienced guides, on every trip we have seen at least a couple of resplendent quetzals. Their foot long tails and breathtaking beauty bring gasps of delight. Most mornings begin with an optional bird walk before breakfast. You will want to bring along binoculars, the best you can afford. No need to bring bird books, our guides have plenty and we use them on the trail and they are available for all on the bus.

Whether you are adding to a life list or are just fascinated by the colors and songs, you won’t be disappointed in birding in Costa Rica.
